Instructions for setting up your PikeNet dial up connection for Windows XP.

If you have any questions during the installation, please call us. We will be happy to answer any questions that you might have. If these instructions do not help you set up the connection successfully or if these instructions do not match your version of Windows XP, then please call the office and we will help you.

First, click Start. Point to "Connect To." Then "Show all Connections." A window should pop up and have a few icons in it. There should be an area that says "Wizard." In this section, double-click on the icon for "New Connection." Click "Next". Now you should be faced with a number of options. Leave the option "Connect to the Internet" dotted and click "Next". Now another menu appears. Again, there are a few options to choose from. Make sure the option "Set up My Connection Manually" is dotted and press "Next." Again, more options appear. This time, make sure the option "Connect using a Dial-up Modem" is dotted and click "Next." Now you should get a box that asks for an ISP Name. In the white box, type "PikeNet" and click "Next." Now another box appears and asks you for a phone number. In the white box put in "217-285-9792." If you do not need to dial 1-217 to call Pittsfield, then you do not need to put in the full number; Just the "285-9792." Click "Next."

Now you should be at a box that asks for your username and password. Input your username and password in the appropriate boxes. The "Confirm Password" box is there to make sure that you didn't accidentally type your password wrong in the first password box. Now there are several options available below these boxes. If you want everyone who uses the computer to be able to use your PikeNet username and password to connect to the Internet, then, check the first box. Leave the box "Make this the default Internet connection" checked. This will help eliminate confusion later. Also, the third option, "Turn on Internet Connection Firewall for this Connection" is checked. A firewall is merely a means of protection to prevent outsiders from accessing your system. It is advised to leave this option checked. Click "Next." Now you should see a final box that has a summary of what you just did and a "Finish" button at the bottom. If you wish to have a shortcut to this connection placed on your desktop for easier access, check the box labeled "Add a shortcut to this connection to my Desktop." Finally, click "Finish" to complete the setup for the Internet connection.

To set up your email account, you will have to go the program called "Outlook Express." You can find this program either directly off the "Start" Menu or by going to "Start >> All Programs >> Outlook Express." If this is the first time you have opened Outlook Express, then a window should appear with a box that is asking for a "Display Name." (If this box does not pop up, click "Tools >> Accounts." Now a window will pop up and say "Internet Accounts" at the top. Click the "Mail" tab. Click the "Add" button and then click "Mail.") In the white box type in the name you wish people to see when they receive an email from you. Click "Next." Now a window should appear asking for your email address. Input your email address in this box (including the "@pikenet.net") and click "Next." Now you should be at a window asking about Incoming and Outgoing Mail Servers. The box at the top should say "POP3." In the incoming mail server box, put in "pop3.pikenet.net" and in the outgoing box, put "smtp.pikenet.net." Click "Next." Now in this next window, input your username and password for PikeNet. Click "Next." Click "Finish."

You are all set up and ready for PikeNet!!!
